0090: This project consists of the addition of a screened in porch and outdoor deck to a suburban home. The existing house did not have a strong connection to the yard which is in the middle of a beautiful stand of mature trees. The goal was to create an intermediary space, half indoors/half outdoors which would allow the owners to bring their lives outdoors and enjoy the yard more. We have to acknowledge and commend our client for commissioning this project. I suspect many would have purchased a generic and soulless "three season room" from their local home center rather than seeking out designers. They were hoping for more than that, and for their effort they have ended up with a much more enjoyable addition. This project is a great example of how we strive to create a significant experience in an otherwise ordinary situation. The concave geometry of the addition creates a sense of enclosure in the yard by subtly closing off the views out to the front yard and street. In order to make the screened porch feel more spacious we wanted to let the ceiling follow the slope of the roof. Still the low side of a simple shed roof would cut off views and daylight. To overcome this we reversed the slope of the roof line towards the center of the addition, opening the porch to daylight and views out to the heights of the treetops. These panoramic images will give you the best feel for the place: | |
