9977: This project is located in the business district of the small town of Merchantville. Although the district is small the context is urban with row buildings and street level storefronts common to east coast cities and towns. The new structure is set apart by its' modern character, but at the same time is similar in scale and color value which tends to make it blend in. It demonstrates that a sensitive response to a historic context does not always have to be an interpretation of the style of the existing buildings. It respects the existing structure by striking a clear line between new and old making almost no alteration to the existing building.
