Links: What is a web site without a page of links? I am going to divide these into two broad categories. The first are links to things that may feed your interest in modern houses. The second are links to specific products that you may wish to incorporate into your house. And now the disclaimer. These links do not constitute an endorsement of these products and you are responsible for what products you choose to use. Yeech! I don't know how that was for you, but disclaimers always leave a bad taste in my mouth. Ok, here we go: Feed your need for Modern Homes: Modernism is a magazine for those interested in 20th-century modernist design, including art deco, midcentury, pop and postmodern. Atomic-Ranch: This is a new quarterly publication focused on modern tract housing from the 50's and 60's. Products, manufacturers, and fabricators for your lamidesign Modern Home: Build It Green: This is the site of local Philadelphia green builder Built It Green. The result of a team of developers, builders, LEED experts in Philadelphia all spun off local green developer Post Green, and their first project The 100k House. We are committed to working with them to create more sustainable versions of our stock plans and new designs. Anawalt Real Estate: This is the site of Zack Anawalt, a California Real Estate Agent and architect with Anawalt Design. He offers a range of real estate and architectural services via Anawalt Design which can serve a person building one of our plans in California. They can provide real estate services for site search and selection, architectural services for local permitting, engineering for CA specific seismic and energy requirements, and assistance with bidding and general contractor selection. In other words, they can make it a whole lot easier to make your project happen in California. Kerf (custom casework): Almost every one of our designs includes a custom piece of caswork in place of conventional closets. These guys make some of the greatest casework we have come across and just what we imagine would fit well with our designs. Solid plywood and durable laminates, practical and smart. We have spoken to them and they are gung-ho to do your casework for our plans. Absolutely Energized (Solar Electric Systems): Many States now have laws that require utility companies to accept excess power generated by solar systems. Previously you would need batteries to store the excess power so it could be used when conditions did not allow the system to produce. Now the storage is not needed. When your system is producing more power than you need the excess is directed back into the utility power grid and is credited against the electricity you take from the grid. Some States meter incoming and outgoing power separately and allow credit only up to the amount you use. Others simply run the meter backwards allowing you to generate a credit. Absolutely Energized is run by a past client of ours who would be eager to help you with your project. He designs and installs systems in NY, NJ, and PA, and would be glad to direct you to resources in your region. Pre-Fab Stairs: Many of our designs have open stairs that must be custom built if you want to enjoy the dynamic of a stair crossing through your space. Here are some alternatives to building a one of a kind stair. Prefab Stairs by Rintal have stock designs in metal and wood that can be a substitute for a custom stair. We like the metal ones. Rintal is a Canadian company and we recently were shown this US company with similar product called Architectural Stairs. They seem to have the same metal stairs as Rintal. Also look at these open riser stairs by Mylen. The Value of Architecture: This is the web site of Los Angeles architect and real estate broker Brian Linder. Brian specializes in "Architectural" properties, meaning historic and contemporary architect designed homes. He has been doing this for some time and has been able to establish that a well designed property will create more value than an ordinary house. Its a good lesson for developers, builders, and anyone considering a modern house. |
